3 Skincare Ingredients to Help Clear Acne In Just Weeks

In my experience with acne, both personally as an acne survivor, and professionally as a Medical Aesthetician, it has become apparent to me that it is not just the breakouts, but the loss in confidence and self-esteem that goes with it that tends to be the biggest problem.

My goal is to extend my knowledge of acne-fighting ingredients and how they benefit acne-prone patients, to help better control them long-term without the use of medication and keep their confidence in tact.

Why am I breaking out?

While acne is more common in teens and young adults, it can occur at any age, even into our 50's and older. The one thing to understand is that acne is an infection of the hair follicle caused by overactive oil production from hormone changes, accumulation of dead skin cells, or bacteria from dirty hands, makeup brushes, etc. Controlling these factors with certain preventative routines and topical skincare ingredients is imperative to not only clear the breakouts you are currently experiencing, but also keep them at bay in the future.

Our top 3 industry favorite acne-fighting ingredients:

1. Salicylic Acid: This plant-based beta hydroxy acid is known to penetrate below the surface to deeply cleanse the pores of oil and inflammation-inducing bacteria. Easily found in cleansers and astringents or toners for gentle daily use, or in-office chemical peels once per month.

2. Retinol: Similar to prescription Retin-A, Retinols like over-the-counter Differin gel are easy and just as effective. This naturally occurring component and derivative of Vitamin A is used to enhance cell turnover and our body's healing process to reduce the amount of dead skin built up in the pores.

3. Benzoyl Peroxide: Used mostly for those with moderate to severe cystic or nodular acne, this ingredient can be used in conjunction with salicylic acid and retinol as an anti-bacterial component. This can be more irritating in areas where there is no bacteria present, so it is best as a spot treatment instead of applying all over the face. Be aware that it can also stain and/or bleach clothing!

Because these ingredients tend to cause some dehydration and sun sensitivity, it is always necessary to keep the skin well hydrated and protected with oil-free, glycerin based creams and an SPF of 30 or higher. Plus, the zinc oxide in proper sun protection can also help as an anti-inflammatory and with the skin's wound healing process – so there's a win-win!

By utilizing these ingredients in the most simple of ways, you will be able to achieve healthy, glowing skin sooner than you think!
